YU Yutopia Review: Is it the most powerful smartphone?

Yu Televentures has come up with its first ever flagship device called YU Yutopia. They claimed it as the “Most Powerful Smartphone Ever“. Does it justify the tagline? Let’s see how it performs. We have been testing this device for past two weeks. The results were quite different from what I was expecting from this device. Let’s jump into the review of YU Yutopia.

Display

YU Yutopia sports a 5.2 Inch Sharp 2K display with 1440*2560 pixels resolution. The display has a corning concore glass protection on top. The display  is gorgeous and looks stunning in all conditions. The color output is clean and viewing angles are good. The 2k display is sharp and the detailing is worth noticing. The touch responsive is smooth but the onscreen capacitive buttons weren’t that responsive as expected. Better to use anti screen protection glass to avoid fingerprints. Yutopia by far has the best display going by the competition. OnePlus you better watch out as it has one of the best screens.

Yu Yutopia Camera review

Yu Yutopia shoots a 21-megapixel rear camera with SONY Exmor RS IMX230 sensor, Image optical stabilization, and dual tone flash. The device features an 8-megapixel selfie camera with BSI 2 sensor. Surprising the camera performed very well to my liking. The Sony Exmor sensor comes into the picture when you talk about the camera quality. In daylight conditions, the 21-megapixel camera did pretty well and the focusing was spot on 8/10 times. The color combination on this device is just amazing.

Design

The design is inspired from previous generation YU phones. It has a centric design similar to Yuphoria and Yunique. The 3.5 mm jack and USB Port are fixed at the center whereas the power button is sandwiched between volume rockers. The 21-megapixel rear camera looks eye candy with a circular design. The fingerprint scanner rests below the camera which is the perfect position. The loudspeaker, fingerprint sensor, and the camera follow the centric design. The design looks premium which has a compact nature. The phone feels solid in the hand even though it weighs only 159 grams. The Yu phone is 7.2 mm thick and has 9.02 thickness with camera bump.

Performance

YU Yutopia packs a 64 Bit Snapdragon 810 quad-core processor with Adreno 430 GPU. The chipset is loaded with 4 Gigs of RAM, so it has all the ingredients of a powerful smartphone. The initial performance was good but with the time, it was getting sluggish. The HD games were playable in performance mode but few frame drops in balanced mode. The browsing experience was good but could have been better. Antutu gave it a score of 66409 which was way behind from its competitor OnePlus Two. The call quality was decent where we had no issues. Fingerprint sensor worked 5/10 times which was disappointing. Few days back the company has rolled out the update which improved its performance.

Let’s talk about heating as YU phones tend to get heat. Thankfully it doesn’t heat as much as we have seen on YU Yureka. In normal temperature, there is no extravagant heat. But when you go out in the sunshine, it does heat because of its metal frame. So avoid using the phone in bright sunshine. Even while browsing with WiFi it tends to get heat.

CyanogenMod OS, Storage, and Around YU

YU Yutopia runs on Android Lollipop 5.1 based on CynogenMod 12.1. The smartphone has one of the popular custom ROMs. It is bundled with rich features which can be customized according to your needs. Most of the times, the UI was smooth which feels like a stock android. There were few glitches which are negligible. It has a 32 GB of internal storage and external storage can be expandable up to 128 GB.

Around YU is one of the coolest features of Yutopia. It is a kind of service which gives better search experience. Instead of installing several apps for each service, Around YU helps you to search anything related to Cabs, Hotels, Restaurants, Flights etc at one go.

Battery Performance

YU Yutopia houses a non-removable 3000 mAh battery. The battery performance was good where I wasn’t expecting from this device. On a full charge, it can last a day on normal usage. If you are a heaving user like me then expect around 5 hours. It goes from 0-60% under 30 mins, thanks to quick charge 2.0.

Pros

  • Impressive camera
  • Sharp AMOLED display
  • Good battery life
  • Compact nature with slim centric design

Cons

  • Sluggish performance
  • Minor heating issues
  • Fingerprint scanner could have been better

My Verdict

YU Yutopia is made for geeks who loves to customize the skin. The display is stunning and the camera is the best quality of this device.
