Google doesn’t want their users to wait for Android 7.1 update. So, Android developers announced their newer iteration for the 7.0 Nougat which is 7.1 Nougat itself. The devices which are going to receive the update includes the current Nexus devices that have yet to be retired. And also according to Google, it should be here as a Developer Preview “later this month.”
Here’s the list of what’s inside Android 7.1 update
- App shortcuts – Lets you see some quick shortcuts for a specific app on home screen on inside app drawer.
- Circular app icons support – The ugly thing gets much uglier if you add that to your app which will make your icons support the Pixel launcher for circular icons.
- Enhanced wallpaper metadata – Lets you provide metadata (or raw data) about your wallpapers to any picker displaying the wallpapers as a preview which will be quite useful for users.
- Image keyboard support – Now you can use images through your keyboard itself from the Google Keyboard which will be natively built into the 7.1 iterations of Nougat.
- Storage manager Intent – Lets an app take the user directly to a new Settings screen to clear unused files and free up storage space on the device.
- Multi-end point calling and telephony configurations support APIs for developers.
Either way, Android 7.1 is now super official outside of Pixel phones and will show up as a Developer Preview through the Android Beta Program before October ends. The Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C will be the first to get access to the beta. Once the final 7.1 release is ready, which should happen in December, the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and supported Android One devices will get access as well. Just make sure to enroll yourself on Android Beta Program if you want to experience it first if you have a supported device with you.
