Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview 5 Now Available!!!

The date has come and Android developers are on time and released their fifth and final developer preview of their Android 7.0 Nougat. As per the Nougat preview roadmap, these builds include “near final” system images for late testing before the final, stable release of Android 7.0 later this summer. As for build numbers, we’re looking at build NPD90G.

According to Google, here’s a quick rundown of what’s included in the final Developer Preview of Nougat:

  • System images for Nexus and other preview devices.
  • An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they’re ready.
  • The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI.
  • The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in pre-installed apps.
  • New Easter Egg.
  • There might be minor tweaks to the UI, but nothing that should surprise us. ( We’ll update the post if we dig them out ).

NEW EASTER EGG

Unlike the last few versions, though, tapping several times on that cartoon depiction doesn’t enter a game (which is a Flappy Bird knock-off in Android 6.0 Marshmallow), but if you press and hold the N it shows a small cat emoji underneath. Tapping that again reveals a “No entry” emoji, which is, earlier, where we thought it ended.

Turns out that’s just the beginning. Once that “No entry” emoji is present, swipe down your notification quick settings, tap Edit and find the ???? Android Easter Egg quick setting then drag it to your quick settings.

After it’s moved, tapping on the new “Empty dish” quick setting toggle begins a game where you have to entice a cat to feed on an empty plate using either “Bits,” “Fish,” “Chicken,” or “Treats.” Should a feline take the bait, which isn’t guaranteed, you’ll receive a notification with a cat and a number. Tapping on it reveals a new window with a smiling cartoon cat that, when long-pressed, can be shared as an image.

16 - 1-1

Great job, Google. We like it.

Developer Preview 5 is now available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9 and Pixel C devices, and you can take them either in OTA update form or system images. If you’re enrolled in the Android Beta program, your device should the Developer Preview 5 update automatically. If not, you can always download the system image for your device and flash this update manually.
